John Austin (Augustine) Whyte

August 23, 1946 – November 7th, 2022

We mourn the loss of our beloved brother, uncle and dear friend. Austin died peacefully on, November 7, 2022, in the care of the compassionate staff at Calvary Hospice, Brooklyn, N.Y. following a long illness. Austin is pre-deceased by his parents, John and Lena Whyte and brother Paddy. Austin will be sadly missed by his brothers: Tommy and Cecil, sisters: Margaret, Ann, Birdie, Joan and Angela, his nephews and nieces, extended family and many friends. Austin was one of nine siblings, who emigrated to New York City, in his early 20’s, along with his brother Tommy. They were encouraged to come and lived with their brother Paddy. Austin dreamed of finding his way to succeed and he did. Soon after arriving he began working at Abby Tavern on Third Avenue. It did not take long, before he took a leap, across the street to partner and open McCormacks Pub and Restaurant, 1992-2012. Austin became part of the fabric in the community, known for his kind heart and hospitality. Austin’s cremation took place on November 15, 2022, his remains will be repatriated to his home in Ireland, for a requiem Mass and burial in Clonberne cemetery at a later date.

I worked at Mc Cormacks for Austin, I am originally from Galway and what fun we had. Always welcoming to everyone, kind natured and good humour. May he rest in peace xx
