Obituary of Betty Coats Lindsey

Betty Coats Lindsey died at her home in Manhattan on January 2, 2023, at the age of 95.

She was born on July 2, 1927, in Tampa, Florida to Eva May Coats (LA) and William Merton Lindsey (MO).  She was a native of Shreveport, Louisiana.

Betty received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama and was inducted into their Phi Beta Kappa Chapter; and received her PhD in Literature from Columbia University.  Her parents took her to New York City as a child and she returned to New York in the 1950’s and fell in love with it.  New York became her home for the next 65 years.  She thoroughly enjoyed the museums, artwork, history, reading, travelling and visiting family.  Betty was an active member of the Calvary St. George Episcopal Church in New York, and especially loved working in their thrift shop for many years.

She is predeceased by her sister Avis Lindsey Long Reid and niece Barbara (Robert) Long Youngberg and a nephew Jules H. Long, Jr.

She is survived by grandnieces/nephews Teresa Hvizdos (TX), Geneva Grant (VA), Claes Youngberg (VA) and Nathan Long (Marly Le Roi, France); and her cousins to name a few Myrtle Coats Melli, Mary Coats Ley, D. Sam Coats all of TX, Molly Coats Jackson (CA) , James H. Coats (FL), Shelley Coats Jones, Betty Coats Miller, Nancy Coats Duggan, all of LA, and Cathleen Coats Barker (VA), along with many other cousins.  Services will be held at St. George’s Chapel, Calvary/St. George Episcopal Church, New York, New York, on January 27, 2023, where she will be interred.
