Obituary of Maurizio Daliana

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Maurizio Daliana.

Maurizio was born in Florence, Italy, where his sense of service to others lead him to study medicine. After graduating from The University of Florence in the early 1960s he immigrated to New York City where he completed his surgical training, and actively practiced general and vascular surgery until his recent retirement. His passion for his work led him to many notable professional accomplishments including the opportunity to teach, mentor and train generations of surgical students from New York Medical College, Mount Sinai and New York University. Throughout his life Maurizio's contribution to improving people's health has been recognized by numerous institutions, the highest of which came from the Holy See. In 1985, Maurizio was knighted by Cardinal O'Connor into the Order of Saint Gregory the Great, the highest honor the Vatican can bestow on a lay person.

Dr. Daliana is fondly remembered by his many students, patients and friends, and has been described as the ideal embodiment of grace, skill, dedication and knowledge.

Apart from his work, Maurizio had a love for travel, the study of history and a good conversation with his friends and family, especially around a fine meal.

He is survived by his children, Michela, Alessandro and Lorenzo, his grandchildren, Valentina, Maxime, Roxana, Eva, Pia and Lara, and his ex-wives, Sharon and Beth-Anne.

In keeping with Maurizio's dedication to health care and in light of the current pandemic, no memorial events will be held.
