At the Center for Independent Living, Ellen instructed adults with late-onset blindness of community resources, as well as legal and financial entitlements. Throughout Ellen's life, she worked as a literacy instructor, and a private tutor helping individuals perfect their English-language skills, and prepare to take their General Education Degree. Ellen was an early member of the Achilles Track Club NYC and completed the NYC Marathon in 1988. Additionally, Ellen was an active member of The National Federation of the Blind and followed the advances in assistive technologies and civil rights of the blind community.
