Obituary of Michael R. Russo
March 5, 2026
Michael "Mickey" Robert Russo entered eternal rest on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at the age of 96. He was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Daniel and Sylvia Russo, where he happily lived his entire life.
As a corrections officer, a sanitation worker, and a postman, he wore many hats. However, he loved no other job more than being a proud member of the New York City Fire Department for 40 years, sharing countless stories about working on Marine 6, his beloved fireboat.
When Michael wasn't working, he was doing what he loved best: traveling. Whether it be to Cuba, Fire Island, Puerto Rico, Las Vegas, Aruba, Atlantic City, or jumping on cruises sailing the Caribbean, he loved nothing more than taking a trip to shoot craps and have some drinks with his friends. If he wasn't traveling, you could probably find him at his favorite place in New York-maybe even the world-McSorley's Old Ale House, where he proudly has his Marine 6 fire helmet displayed right above the bar.
In his last years, Michael lived and was cared for by his niece Lisa, her husband Eddie, and their sons Dan and Chris. He was also cared for by his niece Barbara, her husband Rich, his great-niece Kristin, her husband Matt, and his nephew Danny.
Michael is also survived by his sister Genevieve and many other nieces, nephews, family members, and friends. Michael loved them all deeply. He is predeceased by his sister Theresa, brother Anthony, and his long-time love, Joyce.
Michael will be remembered by all as a man brimming with stories and an endless supply of jokes. However, he also possessed a side of him that not everyone knew - a deep sense of generosity. His kindness, stories, and jokes touched the lives of hundreds of people, both directly and indirectly. He was loved and cherished by all and will be missed by all who loved him.
