Obituary

For many years, Mary was my supervisor at The American Language Institute. And then, we became friends. We would swim at the Palladium pool at NYU followed by lunch. In the pool, Mary and I would gossip and she’d listen to my latest struggles and conflicts. I was amazed at how quickly she would grasp the essence of the problem and give me clear and thoughtful advice. Those chlorinated conversations were very meaningful and ones I’ll never forget. We got to know each other well over those weekly swim/lunch dates and I hope she knew how much I valued them and her wisdom: She was one of the smartest women I knew. Much love to her family.

Professor Mary Coit was my teacher at The American Language Institute at NYU back in 1972. She was so much more than just a classroom instructor. Since that year, she continue supported me and helped me improve my English. It is truly because of her patience and guidance that I was able to successfully graduate and earn my college degree. But her impact reached far beyond just me. Professor Coit also traveled to China, where she spent many years teaching American English at top-level universities. Through her dedication, thousands of Chinese students had the privilege to learn from her. Some of those students eventually came to the United States to pursue higher education, all thanks to Mary’s continuous help.Professor Coit sometimes liked to be called Dr. Coit, and indeed, she earned her PhD. She was a truly great educator who took her teaching and her students very seriously. Today, I am deeply honored to represent all of Dr. Coit’s Chinese students. We want to say: Thank you, Dr. Coit, for your lifelong dedication, your kindness, and your beautiful soul. We will love you and remember you forever."

Mary, I booked a TV show on Netflix. Single card front billing. Recurring. Much thanks to your encouraging 35 years ago. Was calling you to share the good news and only got the answering machine with your voice. Then checked online. Saw this. Thank you for getting me out of China in 1992. Thank you for all your support and help over the years. Thank you for setting up a solid example for all of us whose lives you have touched. Best Wishes (like you liked to say) Daxing
